Starting Price: $24,495

Above Average: Roomy, comfortable, well-connected and tops for towing

Below Average: Driver sightlines, maneuverability in tight confines

Consensus: A well-focused mid-cycle revamp makes this mainstay of the segment even more attractive on every level

Comfortable and powerful, this is the most refined Escape ever.

While it’s on a sporty car-based platform, the Escape has an appealing combination of best-in-class power, an easygoing, comfortable ride and a quiet, elegant interior that should appeal to Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 shoppers. Redesigned and restyled for 2017, the Ford Escape has new options such as the excellent Sync 3 infotainment system, auto parking assist, adaptive cruise control and a handsfree, foot-activated tailgate. There are also two available EcoBoost (turbocharged) 4-cylinder engines, both of which are more powerful and more fuel-efficient than before.

Driving It

"Backed by paddle-shift 6-speed automatic transmissions with Sport mode, both EcoBoost fours revved freely and felt quite responsive—although we’d suggest anyone pondering an Escape with the intelligent AWD system seriously consider stepping up to the more potent 2.0-liter. It makes a stout 275 lb-ft of torque – 97 more of those critical twist units than the 1.5-liter which better offsets the roughly 150 pounds of extra weight." Comparison Test

The 2017 Ford Escape was one of six compact SUVs we drove 450 roundtrip miles from the coastal region of Southern California to the mountains surrounding Big Bear Lake, California, as part of our most recent Compact SUV Comparison Test.

Sync 3

Ford was an infotainment pioneer with its Sync system, a journey that’s had its ups and downs. Its excellent Sync 3 system is available in the 2017 Escape. One of the best systems on the market, Sync 3 has large, easy-to-read graphics, intuitive controls and allows you to use some of your favorite mobile apps.

Build and Price

About $25,000 will get you in the door, while roughly $40,000 will fill its four doors and hatch with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, four-wheel drive and every available option. Build and price your own 2017 Ford Escape to unlock its Fair Purchase Price, 5-Year Cost to Own and more.
