The first 2021 Ford Bronco has rolled out of the factory.
After an absence of 25 years, Ford’s off-road SUV is headed out to dealerships, and to the 125,000-plus buyers who have already placed an order for one.
Rebirth of a Classic Off-Roader
The 2021 Bronco is a 4-wheel-drive-only SUV and a direct competitor to the Jeep Wrangler. It is available in the classic 2-door configuration beloved of 1970s and ’80s Broncos, or, for the first time, with four (removable) doors. Buyers can choose from two engines – a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making up 300 horsepower or a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 good for 330 horsepower. Power travels through a 10-speed automatic transmission or a 7-speed manual transmission available for 4-cylinder models.
21st Century Rock Crawling
Though it gets its name and design theme from a classic SUV of rugged and mechanically simple design, the all-new Bronco is a high-tech off-roader. A terrain management system adjusts suspension and torque based on the driving surface. A full 360-degree camera system can show you the view of each individual tire. There’s even a navigation system with more than 1,000 trail maps. Not road maps. Trail maps.
The Bronco has been a critical smash – it even won a prestigious design award not dedicated to cars earlier this year.
Production Begins After Repeated Delays
But bringing it to market has been a struggle. Ford delayed the Bronco’s launch (originally set for last December) due to COVID-19-related supplier problems. It was then forced to indefinitely delay orders for those who’d selected the painted modular hardtop roof. Though production has now begun, those buyers still don’t know when they’ll get their Bronco.
But the factory line has started. We look forward to bringing you driving impressions soon.
