At the State Fair of Texas, Ford announced horsepower and torque for the new 2017 Raptor, Ford’s ultimate off-road race machine. The Baja-inspired truck is powered by a version of the second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 engine. In this truck, it will put out 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque, increases of 39 horsepower and 76 lb-ft over the first Raptor’s 6.2-liter V8. In addition, the Raptor uses the same high-strength, military-grade aluminum that makes up the body of the current F-150, allowing the Raptor to lose 500 pounds compared to the 2014 model – the last year it was produced. And like the 2017 F-150, the Raptor will also feature a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
This combination of improved powertrain and weight savings offers an extra bonus: an increase in fuel economy. While that isn’t why people seek out the Raptor, it’s still impressive that the new Raptor will best the first-gen model by 3 mpg in combined fuel economy. The 2017 Raptor returns 16 mpg (15 city/18 highway) compared to the first truck’s 13 mpg (12 city/16 highway).
When the Raptor goes on sale at the end of the year, Ford anticipates pricing will start under $50,000.
