Fire Risk: Kia Tells 460,000 Telluride Owners to Park Outside

Kia has recalled 462,869 Telluride SUVs from model years 2020 through 2024 because their power seat motors can overheat, triggering a fire. The company asks owners to park outside away from other vehicles and structures until dealers have had time to repair the problem.

Kia tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that an impact on the power seat side cover or slide controller can cause the motor to operate continuously. It can then overheat, catching seat materials on fire. The problem can happen in a parked or driving car.

Kia says it knows of one fire and seven cases of melted components related to the problem, but no injuries or crashes.

Dealers will replace the slide knob with an improved one and install a bracket to reduce the risk of impact damage, which should correct the problem. Recall repairs are always free.
