EPA: Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV Certified for 303-Mile Range

Hyundai’s funky 2022 Ioniq 5 electric vehicle (EV) will boast a driving range of over 300 miles on a charge when it reaches dealerships early next year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released official figures for the new EV’s range – often one of the last steps before a new vehicle goes on sale.

About the Ioniq 5

The Ioniq 5 is the size of a compact crossover, but designers managed to give it passenger and cargo space that would put it into the midsize class. Unlike gasoline-powered cars, EVs don’t require a transmission tunnel passing through the cabin and separating the seats. Car designers are learning to use that added space to create roomier layouts in small footprints.

The Ioniq 5 uses thin seatbacks, front seats that can lay completely flat, and a center console that can slide all the way forward or back to give drivers a lot of flexible space.

It’s also remarkable for its distinctive design language. Pixelated square lights and angular wheel designs playfully call back memories of 8-bit video games, while gentle curves and a sharp diagonal door crease give it character. It looks like nothing else on the road. It looks like no other Hyundai.

Hyundai hasn’t revealed prices. We expect to see it start in the mid-$40,000 range.

Range Numbers by Trim Level

The Ioniq 5 is available in a 225-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive setup or a 320-horsepower all-wheel-drive version. A standard battery pack holds 58.2 kilowatt-hours of power, while a longer-range pack holds 77.4.

Hyundai will sell it in three trim levels called, appropriately, Long Range AWD, Long Range RWD, and Standard Range.

The longest range is the Long Range RWD. It combines the larger battery with the smaller motor and gets an EPA-certified range of 303 miles on a charge. The Long Range AWD uses the same larger battery but the two-motor AWD setup. It is rated for 256 miles.

The Standard Range rear-wheel-drive model uses a smaller battery and smaller motor for a respectable 220-mile range.

Hyundai has said that a Limited trim is also coming. It hasn’t yet been rated.
