If you want to switch from using gas to using electricity for your transportation needs, buying an electric car is just one part of the process. Most buyers will also want to buy a way to charge it quickly. Every electric vehicle for sale in America today comes with a charging cable that plugs into a standard wall outlet. But this Level 1 recharging provides only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour.
Most drivers want a Level 2 charger, which uses a 240-volt connection. This rate replenishes at 12 to 60 miles of range per hour.
That can mean purchasing a charging point, hiring an electrician, paying to have a 240-volt circuit installed in your home. The cost can run to four figures in some markets.
Or, you could do it yourself.
Virginia-based Electrify America will offer a smart home charging station that doesn’t require professional installation (though it’s an option if you prefer it). The HomeStation is a level 2 charger with adjustable output. It also features a smartphone app for control.
Allows for Off-Peak Charging
It allows users to schedule charging for off-peak hours when electricity is cheapest. The setup also can start charging, stop charging, and view battery status remotely. HomeStation integrates with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, allowing owners to control charging with voice commands.
Electrify America says “The product can be installed with or without the help of a licensed professional, depending on the user’s comfort level. During installation, and with input from a licensed and qualified electrician, the amperage can be configured to deliver either 40, 32, or 16 amps to help avoid expensive upgrades to the home’s electrical panel.”
The adjustable amperage could also save buyers money in the long run. Today, some EVs can accept power only at 16 amps. Buyers who install a 16-amp charger may need to future upgrades if they buy an EV capable of faster charging. That won’t be necessary if you installed an adjustable charging station in the first place.
The HomeStation will cost $649, and is not yet available, though interested buyers can sign up to be notified when it is.
