If you were hoping the most powerful production SUV ever made might arrive in your garage and you haven’t already ordered one, bad news — it’s sold out.
The SUV we’re talking about is the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat. This super-high-performance version of Dodge’s family SUV uses a familiar formula for the brand: Take a big, 6.2-liter supercharged V8 and stuff it in the engine bay, then tweak the rest of the vehicle for better handling. It’s done wonders for vehicles like the Dodge Challenger coupe and Charger sedan, plus the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The result, in this case, is a Dodge Durango SUV with 710 horsepower and the ability to do 0-60 mph in an insane 3.5 seconds and hit 180 mph. That’s like high-end sports car territory, here but done by a 3-row SUV that can carry kids to school and tow up to 8,700 pounds of toys like boats and RVs.
The most expensive Dodge Durango
The 2021 Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat went on sale in November with a starting price of $80,995 – a significant premium over the $31,765 starting price of a standard Durango.
Dodge says the Durango Hellcat will be made only for the 2021 model year and was limited to 2,000 models. Even with its steep price, it didn’t take long for all 2,000 to be sold. Still, there is a slim chance that a new one can be obtained, a company executive said.
“The 2021 Durango Hellcat is only a single model-year run, ensuring that it will be a very special, sought-after performance SUV for years to come,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge Brand, and Interim Chrysler Brand Chief Executive Officer – Stellantis. “Based on anticipated demand, all dealer allocations have already been reserved, but there is still some time to secure an unsold dealer order.”
If you’re unable to somehow still score a new Durango SRT Hellcat, there is still the option of getting another screamin’ Hellcat SUV – the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. It has two rows of seats instead of three and is down 3 horsepower, but it’s still among the fastest and meanest SUVs around. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk starts at $87,670, plus a $1,494 destination charge.
