Chevrolet to offer Android Auto and Apple Car Play on 14 models

Chevrolet is making Android Auto and Apple Car Play compatibility standard across the majority of its 2016 model year lineup. A total of 14 different models – more than any other automaker – are set to add this new smartphone integration to Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system which is now found in nearly every member of the Bowtie Brigade. First to showcase the technology will be the all-new 2016 Chevy Cruze set for an official unveiling on June 24th.

"Partnering with Apple and Google to offer CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility across the widest range of models in the industry is a great example of how Chevrolet continues to democratize technology that’s important to our customers."

Chevrolet cars and trucks fitted with a version of MyLink that uses a new 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, namely the Spark, Malibu, Camaro/Camaro Convertible, Silverado and Silverado HD as well as the new Cruze, will offer both Android Auto and Apple Car Play compatibility. Those with the available 8-inch screen – which includes the aforementioned models, as well as the Corvette/Corvette Convertible, Impala, Volt, Colorado, Tahoe and Suburban –  initially will have Apple Car Play only. However, Chevy aims to complete final testing and development programs that will allow it to add Android Auto compatibility to the larger-screen MyLink systems later in the model year.

Each of the new Chevy systems leverage Android and iPhone functionality to allow their native music, messaging and navigation capabilities to be further enhanced through the use of supplemental third-party apps. While MyLink can automatically recognize the specific type of device, for the moment both kinds of phones must be linked to the vehicle via a USB cable – the better to husband bandwidth and battery life. While Apple Car Play is already on offer in several Ferrari models and Hyundai added Android Auto to its 2016 Sonata with Navigation earlier this week, Chevy will be the first to make both part of its basic in-vehicle infotainment setup. It also will serve as the harbinger of what we can expect to see coming shortly in products from GM’s other divisions.
