Blending Technology with Tradition

To stay relevant in the competitive full-size truck segment, adapting is the name of the game. The Chevrolet Silverado, which was completely redesigned for 2014 with a new stable of fuel-efficient engines and a much-needed revision of the interior, recently added sharp new looks and a bevy of refinements. The Silverado boasts a 12,500-pound towing capacity, and is offered as a regular cab, double cab (with four full doors instead of the traditional extended cab layout) or crew cab. It doesn’t offer flashy options like a turbocharged V6 or diesel power, but the Silverado continues to provide capability, tried-and-true V8 power and creature comforts, and those who opt for either V8 engine can get the excellent 8-speed automatic too.

Driving It

A few impressions from our 2018 Chevrolet Silverado full review: “The 2018 Chevrolet Silverado glides along the highway, quietly despite its boxy design, and smoothly despite its old-school leaf-spring rear suspension. The Silverado’s suspension soaks up big dips with ease, although that same capability also means it’s sometimes floaty off-road or around town.”

First Look: 2019 Chevrolet Silverado

Unveiled along with dozens of other new models at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado seen below will have a new platform, new styling and an expanded range of models.

V8 power, V6 fuel economy

Chevy’s 5.3-liter V8 variant boasts fuel-saving features like direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing. All of these are respectable in their own right, but the real star of the show here is the cylinder deactivation, which is a standard feature on every Silverado equipped with this engine. Just like the name indicates, the V8 engine shuts off four of the eight cylinders to get better fuel numbers under light loads. This strategy is good for getting fuel economy of up to 16 mpg city, 23 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg combined.

Consumer Reviews

KBB.com visitor redwood has been happy with the Silverado in day-to-day life, with only one minor complaint: “Love the design, new style front end,v-8 power, and ride comfort.Needed a truck so i had to decide between a ford F-150 or the silverado 1500. After seeing the truck bed commercials GM put out, the decision was made for a chevy. Have not regretted my decision at all.The only quirk is getting used to the shifting of the 6 speed transmission. The motor seems to be a little jerky while revving up at low speeds.” Read more consumer reviews of the new Chevrolet Silverado.
