Real-world embodiment of the latest virtual racer to be created for the popular Sony Playstation game Gran Turismo 6, the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X VGT Concept is set for a formal reveal at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2X VGT draws its name and inspiration from the legendary Chevy-powered Chaparral Can-Am cars developed by Jim Hall that set new benchmarks for innovation on every level – from composite monocoque chassis structures, lightweight-alloy powertrain systems and race-ready automatic transmissions to active aerodynamic elements and pioneering vehicle data acquisition technology.  Even under a full body drape, it’s clear this radical new Vision Gran Turismo exercise will carry on in that same vein.

"Jim Hall and Chaparral blended the art of racing with science in an unprecedented way, changing the sport forever and inspiring a new generation to experiment with aerodynamics and unconventional materials," said Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. "His race cars were four-wheeled physics projects that proved innovation – and a strong Chevy race engine – could drive you to the winner’s circle." Beyond the Can-Am Series, Hall’s Chaparral operation also met with success in it’s the Trans-Am Series and won the 12 Hours of Sebring as well as taking two Indianapolis 500 wins.

Designed at GM’s Advanced Design Studio with input from Hall, the Chaparral 2X VGT Concept "will serve as an example of what our designers are capable of when they are cut loose, no holds barred," said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. While Welburn admits this one-off is   "a fantasy car in every sense of the word," we wouldn’t be surprised to see at least a few of the elements it incorporates ultimately turn up on future real-world Chevy performance vehicles. Following its grand unveiling in Los Angeles, Playstation fans will be able to download the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X VGT as part of an online update for Gran Turismo 6 in time for the holidays.
