Cadillac to Discontinue XT4 SUV

Cadillac will end production of its XT4 subcompact SUV in January with no replacement planned, the automaker has confirmed. The move comes as the automaker shifts to a mostly electric lineup. The company recently unveiled an all-electric compact SUV, the 2025 Cadillac Optiq.

Factory Converting to Build Electric Cars

Parent company General Motors builds the XT4 at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas. Fairfax Assembly also builds the Chevrolet Malibu sedan, which will leave the GM lineup next month.

Canceling the XT4 will allow GM to convert that factory to build a replacement for the Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicle (EV). Chevrolet canceled the Bolt last year, planning a one-year production gap and a more modern successor.

“General Motors is confident in our strong ICE [internal combustion engine] and EV portfolio and will lean into growth opportunities guided by customer demand,” GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly explains. “There is no change to our previously announced $391 million investment and staffing plans at Fairfax Assembly. This facility will continue to play a critical role in GM’s future with the new Chevrolet Bolt EV.”

Still on Dealer Lots

Dealers still have thousands of XT4 models on sales lots, and Cadillac will continue building them through January. Our editors praise the XT4 on dealer lots today for its spacious cabin and a generous list of standard equipment.

Its ride quality isn’t quite up to par with competitors like the Audi Q3 and BMW X1. But news of its cancelation may make the last XT4 models a bargain. Dealers are sometimes willing to accept lower offers for vehicles an automaker has stopped producing, hoping to move them off the lot to make space for something shoppers still see in advertisements.
