Later this summer, BMW will launch high performance versions of its top two SUVs with the introduction of the 2020 BMW X5 M50i and X7 M50i. Powered by a twin turbo 4.4-liter V8, these SUVs will boast 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Adding to that enhanced output are specific M tuning of the suspension and 8-speed automatic transmission with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system.
The package adds 67 horsepower and 74 lb-ft of torque over standard BMW X5 and BMW X7 xDrive50i models. The X5 can accelerate to 60 in just 4.1 seconds, while the larger, heavier X7 turns the trick in 4.5 seconds. Both are electronically limited to a 130 mph top speed when equipped with all-season rubber and 155 mph when summer performance tires are specified.

The 2020 BMW X5 M50i starts at $82,150, while the X7 M50i is priced from $99,600. Both prices exclude $995 delivery.
Sporting attitude
The 2020 X5 and X7 M50i models benefit from a specially tuned version of the xDrive all-wheel system that features an M Sport rear differential with electronic locking. All the power can be directed to the rear axle when all-wheel drive is not required.
In addition, the two vehicles have suspensions tuned specifically for them by M Sport. The X5 is equipped with the Adaptive M Suspension while the larger X7 has a 2-axle air suspension setup, which is optional on the X5. The air suspension lowers the ride height by nearly an inch when Sport mode is engaged, or the vehicle’s speed exceeds 85 mph. It also has a function that allows the vehicle to be raised by 1.6 inches when greater ground clearance is needed.
Bigger brakes
Both models are equipped with large M Sport brakes that incorporate 2-piece, lightweight compound brake disks. The calipers are painted blue and carry M logos. The 2020 BMW X5 M50i has 20-inch alloy wheels with 275/45R20 all-season tires, while 21- and 22-inch wheel and tire packages are available with performance rubber. The X7 M50i comes with standard 22-inch wheels with 275/40R22 front and 315/35R22 summer performance tires. Buyers can also opt for 21-inch rims fitted with all-season tires.
Distinguishing styling cues
The 2020 BMW X5 and X7 M50i models are set off from the standard models by the use of front bumpers with larger openings allowing more air to pass through the cooling system. The rocker panels and rear bumpers are more highly contoured to set them apart from the standard models. High gloss Shadowline trim and Cerium Grey highlights are used on exterior trim elements. Inside, the sills have lighted M50i logos, there’s a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel and gear selector, Vernasca perforated leather upholstery and an anthracite colored headliner.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional featured
Advanced telematics is part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional setup in both the X5 and X7 M50i models. This latest generation of iDrive features a 12.3-inch digital instrument display in front of the driver and another 12.3-inch screen in the center of the dash that responds to voice commands, gestures and the console-mounted iDrive controller.
The infotainment system includes navigation as well as bundled services through the Connected Package Professional that include remote and concierge services, street parking information and real-time traffic info for the first four years of ownership.
