BMW, Rolls-Royce Recall 80,000 Vehicles Over Brake Problem

BMW and its Rolls-Royce subsidiary have issued a recall covering nearly 80,000 vehicles because of problems with their braking systems.

The company tells federal safety officials that the vehicles “have been assembled with an integrated brake system that may not function according to specifications.”

Modern cars have mechanical brakes and electronic boosters that increase braking power. BMW says the mechanical brakes are not affected by this problem, so owners should still be able to stop the cars. But the boost function can fail, potentially increasing the stopping distance without warning. That could cause an accident.

Also, the company says, anti-lock systems and dynamic stability control can fail, which “could affect vehicle handling and control.” Owners might see a warning message on the dashboard as the problem develops.

Dealers will replace the entire integrated braking system to correct the problem. Recall repairs are always free.
