BMW has issued a second recall for 11,579 previously recalled vehicles because a new component may not have solved a braking problem.
Modern cars have mechanical brakes and electronic boosters that increase braking power. BMW says the mechanical brakes are not affected by this problem, so owners should still be able to stop the cars. But the boost function can fail, potentially increasing the stopping distance without warning. That could cause an accident.
Recalled models include some, but not all, examples of the:
- 2023 BMW X1
- 2023-2024 BMW 7 Series
- 2023-2024 BMW I7
- 2023-2024 BMW X7
- 2023-2024 BMW XM
- 2024 BMW 5 Series
- 2024 BMW I5
- 2024 BMW X5
- 2024 BMW X6
The company tells federal safety officials that an integrated brake module installed as part of an earlier recall “may not function according to specifications.”
So, dealers will replace the module again. “Parts availability is very limited,” the company says. Owners will receive two letters – a first warning them of the problem and, later, as a part is made for their car, a second to schedule the replacement.
Manufacturers recall millions of cars every year to fix safety defects. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach them all. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
