  • First solely Aston-designed new engine since 1968

British luxury sports-car maker Aston Martin, whose products currently use either a 5.2-liter V12 or a Mercedes-AMG-sourced 4.0-liter turbo V8, is developing a new turbocharged V6 engine. The new six will make its production debut in the Valhalla, a mid-engine supercar due in 2022.

First all-new engine since 1968

The new V6 is the first solely Aston design of an all-new engine since 1968. It goes internally by the codename “TM01.” That’s a reference to Tadek Marek, a highly regarded Aston engineer credited with developing the company’s inline-6 engine in the 1960s. The new powerplant displaces 3.0 liters and has its turbocharger located within the V formed by the cylinder banks. It also features dry-sump lubrication for a lower engine height and more effective lubrication under high cornering loads. Aston claims the engine weighs less than 200 kg (440 pounds).

Aston’s most powerful engine yet

The new Aston V6 will power both hybrid and plug-in-hybrid vehicles. Aston Martin is not yet releasing horsepower and torque figures, except to say that the hybridized engine is “set to be the most powerful in [the] Aston Martin range.” That means output would have to exceed the 715-horsepower 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 in the DBS Superleggera.

Arrives in 2022

The new 3.0-liter V6 will have a mid-engine placement in the 2022 Valhalla supercar. Also, it’s will find its way under the bonnet of several of the brand’s front-engine offerings as well. Look for it in the next-generation Vanquish, and it could appear eventually in the DBX crossover and a version of the Vantage sports car as well.
