AMG Celebrates 55th Birthday with Special Edition G-Wagon

AMG is 55 years old this year. To celebrate, you can get a special edition of the famed Mercedes-Benz G-Class. But it’ll cost you somewhere north of $160,000.

Mercedes hasn’t announced the price yet. But we know a few other details about the 2022 Mercedes AMG G 63 Edition 55. Including the fact that the company will build only 55 for the U.S. market, so your odds of ending up in one are slim.

Edition 55 gets no mechanical upgrades. It’s stuck with the pedestrian 577-horsepower 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 that AMG engineers build by hand for the model. Mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, it’s good for a 4.4-second 0-60 mph run. In a boxy SUV based on an old military design. A 2-speed transfer case and permanent 4-wheel-drive should make it capable of some impressive low-speed rock crawling, too.

Outside, Edition 55 gets custom 55th-anniversary graphics, forged 22-inch wheels, and the blackened grille and trim of the Night Package. Inside, red-and-black Nappa leather lines every upholstered surface but the steering wheel, which is covered in grippy faux suede. Matte-finish carbon fiber trim completes the look, as do numerous “55” badges.

Pricing hasn’t been announced, but we expect exclusivity to push it near the $200,000 mark.
