At any given time, there are about 275 models of car, truck, or SUV for sale in the United States. Americans consistently buy the same 30 over and over. Just 11% of models account for nearly half of all new car sales.
Kelley Blue Book’s third quarter Light Vehicle Sales Report shows that Americans bought at least one copy of more than 270 different vehicles from July to September. But the success of each model varied wildly.
Americans bought 167,962 of the best-selling model – the Ford F-150. We bought just 17 of the worst – the Fiat 124.
The F-150 alone outsold 31 brands, including Jeep, Nissan, and Tesla.
Americans continue to buy more SUVs than cars and trucks combined. Midsize SUVs made up almost 22% of new vehicles sold in the third quarter. Compact SUVs followed with 20%. Full-size trucks made up another 14%.
The Top 30 Best-Selling Vehicles:
There are a few surprises in the top 30. There’s always a bit of churn as models age and are redesigned, but the venerable Honda Civic narrowly missed the group. An all-new Civic for 2022 will probably push it back into the leaders’ pack by the end of the year.
The Ford Bronco makes its first appearance, cementing it as a real challenger to the Jeep Wrangler among off-roaders.
Just two luxury vehicles and two electric vehicles made the list. They’re the same pair – the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 – as Tesla has become America’s best-selling luxury automaker regardless of powertrain.
