Ford has begun rolling out more details on its redesigned 2018 Expedition full-size SUV that was unveiled earlier this year at the Chicago Auto Show. The latest news is that the 2018 Expedition will have a maximum tow rating of 9,300 pounds, a certified SAE-spec figure Ford says will give it best-in-class capability. To help those owners who plan to make use of that potential, the new Expedition also will offer Ford’s trick Pro Trailer Backup Assist feature.
First introduced on the 2016 Ford F-150 Pickup, the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system goes a long way towards lowering stress levels and speeding up the reversing process. A class-exclusive to the new Expedition, it lets a driver effectively “steer” the trailer by using a control knob on the dash while the vehicle then handles the actual reverse steering function and limits the speed.

“Pro Trailer Backup Assist is a smart solution to save time and increase productivity for our customers,” said Doug Scott, marketing manager, Ford Truck Group. “Instead of struggling to back up their trailer, they can spend more time on the job or enjoying the lake.”

As previously announced, the 2018 Expedition boasts other advanced tech touches including a full array of driver assists as well as Ford’s latest Sync3 infotainment system with Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and Sync Connect, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a new wireless device charging capability–making it the first Ford product to offer that feature.
