Luxury electric vehicle (EV) builder Polestar has a unique new car on the way – a low-slung crossover with sleek, coupe-like looks, a zero-to-60-mph time of under 4 seconds, and no pesky rear window.
You read that right. The Polestar 4 is a strange one.
It’s strange and lovely. Automotive journalists have quarreled (mildly) over whether to call it an SUV, but Polestar says that’s what it is. It’s sportier-looking than the rugged-stance Polestar 2 sedan already on the road or the Polestar 3 SUV expected to begin deliveries soon.
And yes, it does lack a rear window. A panoramic glass roof arcs down to meet a panel of body-colored metal where you’d expect to find glass. The SUV has a rearview mirror, but it’s all screen, showing what’s behind the vehicle thanks to a camera mounted on the rear of the roof, looking like a sharkfin antenna.
Polestar engineers maintain that you get a better view of what’s behind you from this setup since no rear seat headrests are blocking your view.
An Android-powered cockpit features an enormous 15.4-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen. Google Maps, Assistant, and Play are all built-in, and the car can receive over-the-air updates to add and tweak features over time.
The 4 is available with a single motor driving the rear wheels, making 272 horsepower. That one, Polestar says, has “a preliminary range target of over 300 miles.”’
A dual-motor setup gives you all-wheel drive (AWD) and 544 hp, making it the fastest car Polestar has developed yet. That one jumps to 60 in 3.7 seconds. Polestar projects a range of 270 miles.
Polestar hasn’t said when deliveries will begin. But it expects to transition “from a one-car to a three-car company in 2024.”
