The Toyota Sienna has been our Best Buy Award winner in the minivan segment for four straight years. Toyota’s family hauler doesn’t need much improvement to keep it a top choice for anyone who needs three rows of seating and the convenience of sliding doors.
For the 2025 model year, Toyota will make several welcome improvements. They include convenience features, such as an available vacuum-and-fridge combo, new safety tech, and an advanced rear seat reminder.
New Rear Seat Reminder Tech
The 2024 Sienna on dealer lots today has a rear seat reminder system. However, the 2025 model will have an all-new technology to help remind drivers of rear-seat passengers and pets.
The new version uses “millimeter-wave radar that is designed to detect movement in the vehicle and send alerts to notify the driver or Toyota app user through a series of escalating warnings,” the company says.
A federal law passed in 2021 mandates rear-seat reminder tech in new cars. However, child safety advocates are concerned that federal regulators have not yet written the rules that will tell automakers how to comply with the law’s requirements.
Mounted in the headliner, Toyota says, the radar can detect movement in the second- or third-row seats. Toyota says the system requires no subscription. However, the company notes that it will be active for “up to 10 years or through the life of 4G connectivity.”
Vacuum, FridgeBox at Last
Toyota planned to introduce the in-car vacuum cleaner and drink-cooling FridgeBox on the Sienna several years ago. But a supplier shut down, leaving several automakers vacuumless and Cheerios wedged in the seats of minivans nationwide.
Now, the company has found a new supplier. The two features come paired in the center console. They’re standard on the Platinum trim and available on the Limited grade.
Fit and Finish Improvements, New Microphones
We haven’t heard many complaints about the build quality of Sienna interiors. But Toyota says it “updated” the interior fit and finish of the seats, center console, and dashboard all the same.
Improved microphones should help the intercom conversation system, and almost all charging ports have been upgraded to the USB-C standard (with one USB-A port in the dash for older devices you haven’t updated yet).
An updated multimedia system makes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard at every trim level.
Exterior changes are limited to new wheel designs and darkened door handles and window trim on the XSE trim and Woodland edition.
The changes should keep the Sienna at the top of the small minivan class, though the Honda Odyssey remains an excellent choice, and the Kia Carnival has gained a hybrid option for 2025.
