An all-new edition of the Toyota 4Runner midsize SUV is one of the most anticipated new cars of the 2025 model year, if only because Toyota waited 15 years to update its off-road darling.

They appear to have gotten it right. The automotive press is still waiting for the chance to drive the new 4Runner. On paper, however, Toyota seems to have understood what longtime fans want and how to update it for a new era.

The 2025 4Runner keeps its boxy design theme and the dimensions of a genuine off-roader, but a more fuel-efficient turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and the option of an i-Force Max Hybrid powertrain — both more powerful than the old engine — bring it up to date. The precious roll-down rear window remains, but it now comes as part of an available power liftgate. Modern conveniences like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, even at the least expensive trim level.

A pair of off-road trims give dedicated trailhounds options. The TRD Pro Toyota fans love is back, joined by a more upscale Trailhunter version with two extra inches of ground clearance, hardier shocks, and a discreet snorkel air intake for fording waterways.
