2025 Mini Cooper S Hardtop: More Power, More Retro

The 2025 Mini Cooper S seen from a front quarter angle

Mini used this week’s New York International Auto Show to reveal the North American version of the 2025 Cooper S Hardtop. We’ve known the basic outlines of the car for months, but everything revealed until now has been meant for Europe.

U.S.-spec Cooper models (long the hardtop’s nickname, “Cooper” is its government name now) will use a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 201 horsepower. That power goes to the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). No, there’s no manual, not even as an option.

If it’s any consolation, Mini says the Cooper S will jump from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds.

Prices start at $33,195 (including the mandatory $995 shipping fee – still one of the industry’s lowest even though Mini ships these from Europe).

The look is even more classic Mini than last year’s edition — if that’s possible. It’s shorter than the model currently on dealer lots. The body almost completely lacks fender flares, and the hood loses the scoop above the grille. It’s one of the most straightforwardest looks Mini has penned in years.

The cabin takes its cues from the 1950s original with just three dominant elements. But each is a modern update on the classic – a chunky steering wheel (the best kind), a toggle bar with climate controls, and a giant circular touchscreen conveying everything a driver would need to know.

If you don’t want to commit to one interior look the entire time you own your car, you don’t have to. Mini explains, “As part of the optional Mini Experience Modes, two projector units beam various illuminated graphics onto the dashboard. The interplay of visual design, ambient lighting, and sound design changes the appearance of the cockpit and opens new possibilities for personalizing the Mini Cooper S.”

Mini says production has already begun. The first models will reach U.S. showrooms in May.
