Infiniti takes its time with a redesign. The brand’s QX80 full-size SUV has been on the road largely unchanged since 2010.
But when the redesign comes, it’s as thorough as they get. The 2025 QX80 is all new, keeping nothing but an updated take on its predecessor’s imposing mien.
The new flagship from Nissan’s luxury brand will also be the first Infiniti product to cross the $100,000 line. The base price, though, is $84,445 (including the mandatory $1,995 delivery fee).
Dramatic Proportions
Some car designers, confronted with a full-size SUV, try to dress down its bulk. That’s never been Infiniti’s thing. The QX80 has always had a grand bearing. For 2025, it keeps that unapologetically big look. But it touches it up with elegant details.
Infiniti, almost comically, calls it “an anti-wedge profile.” We agree – there are no sleek lines here.
The sides are still vertical slabs. The fascia is as upright as ever. The car evokes chiseled obsidian, not flowing silk. But the few design elements that break the theme are tasteful. Infiniti says the intersecting diagonal lines of the grille were inspired by a bamboo forest. The segmented lights by piano keys.
Infiniti has gone far beyond puddle lights. As you approach the QX80 with the key at night, it plays an animation on the ground to light your path to the car.
Advanced Technology Options
Inside, Infiniti has entered the screen size wars in a tasteful way. A sculpted dash offers a pair of 14.3-inch displays, one for the driver and one in the center, mounted high. HVAC and seating controls are found on – you guessed it – another screen. This one is mounted on the center console at an angle. Rear-seat passengers get their own similar screen.
The first and second rows are available with heated and cooled seats. The third row is available heated. But if you’re too posh to adjust your own temperature, the QX80 will do it for you. Infiniti explains, “An additional segment-first technology, available Biometric Cooling, helps keep those in the second row at a comfortable temperature. An infrared sensor integrated into the vehicle’s headliner detects when a passenger is hot and near-instantly adjusts the temperature and air flow to send cool air to the second row – without any interaction required from the driver or front-seat passenger.” Infiniti says its testing shows that “Biometric Cooling can get passengers to a comfortable temperature in 50% less time.”
Klipsch, a builder of high-end home speakers, is making its way into the auto market for the first time next year. Both Ram and Infiniti have signed deals to offer Klipsch systems. The QX80 may be the first to reach market. Lower trim levels get a 14-speaker setup. Higher-end trims get 24 speakers, including a set built into the front seat headrests.
V6 More Powerful Than Old V8
The new QX80 drops its standard V8 but gains power in the process. Every trim level now gets a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 making 450 horsepower – 50 more than the old powerplant. Power goes through a 9-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels or all four wheels depending on trim level.
Drive modes include Eco, Sport, Snow, and a customizable Personal setting. An optional air suspension lowers the giant by 2.8 inches when parked to help you get in and out easier, and raises it by 2.4 when needed for off-road conditions.
” Additional enhancements that benefit ride and handling include a frame with 57% greater lateral stiffness versus the preceding QX80 and the adoption of an electric power steering rack, which has 300% increased torsional stiffness and facilitates advanced driver assistance features,” Infiniti says.
That driver assistance suite can include, at added cost, a hands-free highway driving system that functions “in certain freeway driving scenarios.”
