The Toyota Tundra is fourth in sales among full-size pickups in America. But it remains an underappreciated gem. Our expert test driver says it “combines rugged good looks, a comfortable cabin, and recognized reliability and resale value.”
The truck’s combination of a truck body bolted to a ladder box frame and coil-spring rear suspension gives it truck toughness and a car-like ride (today’s Ram 1500 uses a similar setup). An available i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain answers V8-powered trucks with 437 horsepower while managing up to 22 mpg.
For 2024, Toyota has seen little need to improve the Tundra. However, the automaker has made incremental updates that give buyers a few new choices.
Factory Lift, Blacked-Out Package
Toyota will offer a 3-inch TRD suspension lift kit as a factory option for 2024. The same kit was a dealer-installed option last year.
A new Nightshade package appears. That’s Toyota’s name for the ubiquitous blacked-out styling packages every automaker seems to make now. On the Tundra, it means blacked-out wheels, fenders, grille, mirror caps, and badges. It can’t be optioned with every color, but the list of colors you can pair with the blacked-out look is long. It is limited, however, to the high-end Limited trim.
The TRD Off-Road Package, with its all-terrain tires, added skid plates, and upgraded suspension, will now be available on the upscale Platinum truck.
Finally, off-road enthusiasts know the most potent form of Tundra is the limited-edition TRD Pro. Every year, Toyota builds its most capable off-road truck in one exclusive color. For 2024, it will be a shade called Terra – a glossier version of terra cotta.
