Toyota’s getting into genealogy — researching the family history, probably gonna do one of those 23andMe things.
Last year, the brand gave the world a 1980s throwback for the 4Runner’s 40th anniversary.
This week, it celebrated the Supra’s 45th with a 1990s-inspired edition.
Now, it’s digging a little deeper and more obscure. The 2024 Toyota GR86 Trueno Edition honors a car few remember unless they go digging in the archives. But someone at Toyota is apparently sleuthing and loving it.
A Legend to Drifters
The Toyota Sprinter Trueno was a 2-door hatchback derived from the Corolla with a few performance parts to turn it into one of the original hot hatches. If the name isn’t familiar to you, that’s because it never sold well in the U.S., where it was folded back into the Corolla lineup after a brief appearance in the 1980s.
But it has a cult following as one of the first cars prominent in the drifting scene. The mid-1980s version had the internal code name AE86 at Toyota, and if you’ve been paying attention, you just figured out where we’re going.
Toyota will honor the classic sprinter with a 2024 GR86 Trueno Edition.
Toyota says, “the GR86 is recognized by many enthusiasts as Toyota’s spiritual successor to the AE86.”
Limited Edition
The company will build just 860 copies for the U.S. market. Toyota will offer them in red or white, with a 1980s-inspired graphics package including a thick black hood stripe and two thick stripes on the doors. The mirror caps and duckbill spoiler wear the same black. They’ll ride on model-specific 18-inch alloy wheels.
Toyota says pricing will be available “later this year.” The current Toyota GR86 begins at $28,400.
Inside, red and black faux suede and leather seats continue the color scheme.
New Performance Parts for Every GR86
The Trueno Edition comes with a new Performance Package that will be optional on every GR86. It includes a new set of ZF Sachs dampers, Brembo brake calipers, and new suspension tuning from Toyota’s Gazoo Racing unit. Surprisingly, Toyota says the kit will also be available as an upgrade to existing 2022 and 2023 GR86 models.
