If there’s a trend in car design that defines the 2020s, it will probably be darkened trim.
Not just black-painted cars. Those have always been an option — famously, the only option at one point. But vehicles with black grilles, black wheels, black trim — they’re everywhere.
Kia calls it a Nightfall Package. Nissan calls them Midnight Edition. Toyota calls them Nightshade Editions. Seemingly, every automaker has one.
So we shouldn’t be surprised by yet another one. But this one looks better than we would have predicted.
Hyundai will roll out an all-black version of its Palisade 3-row SUV for 2024. It’s called the Palisade Calligraphy Night edition, and though Calligraphy Night doesn’t sound like a party, this one’s pretty cool. As the name hints, it’s available only on the top-of-the-line Calligraphy trim.
It looks better than it has any right to in a world where Darth Budget can drive a Kia Seltos Nightfall.
The darkest Palisade gets a huge darkened chrome radiator grille, darkened emblems and badges, 20-inch liquid black wheels, and black roof rails. Inside, it gets dark premium microsuede upholstery instead of Nappa leather seating, and oh, don’t eat a powdered donut in there. The aluminum trim inside is darkened as well.
It sounds a bit over-the-top, but somehow, the black works with the Palisade’s huge proportions and boxy look. It’s intimidating in a way many midnightshadefall editions aren’t.
The Palisade Calligraphy Night Edition is available only in all-wheel drive (AWD).
Other changes for the 2024 Palisade are minimal. Every trim but the entry-level SE now comes with dual-zone climate control and second-row automatic temperature control. The SEL Premium and higher now include rear-window sunshades.
