New technologies can improve quickly.
Gasoline is an old technology. When automakers look to improve a gas-powered car between model years, they rarely make substantive mechanical changes. Unless a car is due for a redesign, the year-to-year tweaks are mostly bigger screens and new ways to use your phone in the car.
Electric vehicles (EVs) are a new technology. Sometimes, automakers can improve them significantly with minor changes.
The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E gets no cosmetic changes, but it drives farther between charges, spends less time refilling at a charger, and, in its quickest trim, is faster than the 2023 model.
The 2024 Mach-E prices start at $41,890 (including the $1,895 destination charge).
Faster GT Model With Performance Upgrade
Engineers modified the electric motor on the Mach-E’s rear axle to produce more torque, Ford says, though horsepower figures haven’t changed.
The GT is still at the top of the lineup in terms of speed. But it’s now available with a Performance Upgrade package. That lets it warp from 0 to 60 in just 3.3 seconds – faster, Ford says, than any current Tesla Model Y or even the Porsche Taycan.
The recently unveiled 2025 Porsche Taycan, however, would like a word with Ford engineers about that claim.
Ford says its testers managed an 11.8-second quarter mile in the Mach-E GT with Performance Upgrade.
Every trim level also gets Ford’s Blue Cruise hands-free highway driving system.
Mach-E Rally Debuts
The Blue Oval has another new trim on the way for 2024. The Mach-E Rally brings off-road-focused upgrades.
“But isn’t this already an SUV,” you ask?
Barely. Ford wouldn’t like to hear it, but the Mach-E has long been closer to a high-performance wagon than something you’d take up the dunes with a Bronco. It’s so low to the ground and tuned for road use that the IRS briefly classified it as a sedan for tax credit purposes last year (then rethought its decision).
But there’s a dirt-road version coming. The 2024 Mach-E Rally gets a higher ride, a brawnier suspension, all-terrain tires, and some gloss white cabin accents that …OK, maybe not everything about it fits the electric mudder theme.
More Range, Faster Charging
The more useful day-to-day upgrades, however, come to the electricity side of the EV experience.
Ford says every version gets longer range than its 2023 equivalent (except the Rally, which has no 2023 equivalent).
Vehicle | 2024 model year EPA-estimated range | Improvement |
Mustang Mach-E Select, standard-range battery, rear-wheel drive | 250 | + 20 |
Mustang Mach-E Premium, extended-range battery, rear-wheel drive | 320 | + 20 |
Mustang Mach-E GT | 280 | + 10 |
Mustang Mach-E Rally | 265 | N/A |
They’ll also refill faster.
“The 2024 Mustang Mach-E SUV with available extended range battery charges almost 20% faster with DC fast charging than previous models, enabling drivers to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 36.2 minutes and get back on the road,” Ford says. That’s about nine minutes faster than last year. “Standard range battery offerings charge 10%-80% in 32.3 minutes, which is 5.7 minutes faster than the Mustang Mach-E at launch,” the company says.
Most owners, however, are likely to use slower chargers at home most of the time.
Tesla Chargers Under a Different Name
Ford claims that it has dramatically expanded its BlueOval Charge Network. That’s true, but not because Ford built a lot of chargers.
Ford, instead, got access to the massive Tesla Supercharger network for owners of its EVs. The company now says its BlueOval Charge Network is “North America’s largest public charging network” because it contains Tesla’s immense network within it.
