Subcompact SUVs are often the least-expensive option on dealership lots. Now that subcompact cars have almost disappeared from the American market, the smallest sport utility in a showroom is often the most affordable option car shoppers have.
But they’re rarely the most attractive option. They’re called cute utes, but they’re rarely cute. Odd proportions and awkward shapes plague the segment.
The Chevy Trailblazer is one of the few that manages to look good while keeping prices low. It’s getting a new look for 2024, but Chevy hasn’t messed with what works. It’s still a nicely tailored little guy.
The Trailblazer’s grille has grown. Chevrolet says each trim level gets its own grille pattern. New, thinner LED daytime running lights keep the bigger maw from visually overwhelming the SUV’s small frame. Reshaped headlights underneath seem a little smaller, which probably helps keep the look in proportion.
The rear fascia has been reworked as well, though the changes are subtle.
Inside, an 11-inch touchscreen takes the place of the old 7-inch model. The bigger screen does a lot to make the cabin look updated. Better yet, Chevy has not fallen back on the common trick of making a big touchscreen available only at higher trim levels – every 2024 Trailblazer gets the same screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now standard.
We’ve always liked that Chevy makes the Trailblazer available in interesting color combinations, many with contrast-color roofs. For 2024, the lineup gets two new hues, Cacti Green and Copper Harbor.
Nothing has changed mechanically. Buyers have the same two powertrain options – a choice of turbocharged 3-cylinder engines making 137 horsepower or 155. Front-wheel-drive (FWD) versions use a continuously variable transmission, while all-wheel-drive (AWD) editions get a 9-speed automatic.
An upgrade would have been nice — our test drivers have always found power a letdown in the Trailblazer. But it will likely remain a solid choice for those who want something a little more expressive in the most affordable price range.
