All-New 2023 Toyota Sequoia Touts Hybrid Power, Tailored Suit, and Price to Match

2023 Toyota Sequoia CapstoneThe 2023 Toyota Sequoia is a markedly better vehicle than the 2022 Sequoia. And it better be. It’s markedly more expensive.

Toyota’s giant SUV will start at $58,300 for 2023 – a whopping $8,000 increase over last year’s sticker. Prices rise to nearly $80,000 when fully equipped. Toyota also charges a $1,495 destination fee on all Sequoias.

First Update in 14 Years

The 2023 Sequoia is an entirely new design from the wheels up. The prior model was designed in 2008, so the big SUV was overdue for an update.

It also has two sets of tires to fill. It takes over for the old Sequoia, of course. But it also becomes the only large SUV on Toyota sales lots, as Toyota has pulled the legendary off-road Land Cruiser from its American lineup this year. There’s a new Land Cruiser overseas. But Toyota elected not to sell it in America.

Longtime Land Cruiser fans can still get the vehicle – dressed in leather and dollar signs as the 2023 Lexus LX.

New Hybrid Powertrain, Ultra-Luxe Trim

Every 2023 Sequoia is a hybrid. The new i-Force Max Hybrid powertrain pairs an electric motor with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6, making 437 horsepower – 56 more than last year’s model with a big V8 engine.

Power goes through a 10-speed automatic transmission to either the rear wheels or an optional part-time 4-wheel-drive setup.

It tows 9,520 pounds — over 200 beyond the Ford Expedition — and is made in America at Toyota’s factory in San Antonio, Texas.

At the high end, a new Capstone Edition brings the Sequoia to a higher level of luxury, with extra sound-deadening material and ambient LED lighting.

2023 Toyota Sequoia

Sculpted Look, Busy Cabin

Full-Size SUVs tend to look… well… full-size. But Toyota designers have done a good job making the Sequoia’s bulk appear manageable. Big, angular fender flares keep the profile from looking like a barn. Brightwork low on the doors doubles the window trim and suggests motion.

Inside, available two-tone leather, wood, and chrome give it four colors rather than the more typical three. A huge (optional) 14-inch central touchscreen and oversize air vents contribute to a theme of BIG. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, as is a 4G Wi-Fi connection. The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is set to go on sale in late summer.
