Not everything is meant to progress. Once in a long while, something reaches its peak and stays pretty much there.
The Mazda MX-5 Miata has carved out an utterly unique and perfect place in the automotive world. Everyone knows someone who loves a Miata. When someone buys a Miata, you understand why, and you can see yourself making the same decision someday.
It’s not necessarily the perfect car. It’s the perfect expression of what it is – affordable fun at legal speeds.
Mazda is smart enough not to mess with happy. The 2023 MX-5 is the 2022 MX-5, with a new color choice.
Prices go up slightly to account for [gestures at world outside] you know… 2022.
The point of entry, the Sport model, carries a price tag of $28,050 – up from the $27,650 of last year’s model.
That new color option? Zircon Sand Metallic – a khaki number.
The MX-5 uses a lusty little 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 181 horsepower and a 6-speed stick. An automatic transmission is available only on the high-end Ground Touring trim.
But the Miata has never been about power. Its magic is in its small form and sprightly suspension. Kinematic Posture Control – the software Mazda developed to restrain body roll and keep it linear in the corners – that’s what you’re paying for when you buy an MX-5. That, and the feeling of throwing the soft top down with one hand at a stoplight in two seconds flat.
They kept that in. Not everything is meant to progress.
