Black is the new black. But the trend may have an expiration date.
The last two years in car design have seen nearly every manufacturer offer blackout packages – optional extras that turn much of the chrome on a car’s exterior to black or a close-to-black, dark, glossy shade. Audi is the latest to get in on the trend, with a Design Edition package for the 2023 S6 and S7.
But the German company says it’s a limited edition, and they don’t plan to offer it after the 2023 model year. It’s also more expensive than most – it adds $2,500 to the MSRP – but it’s a little more extensive, too, including a contrast-color black roof.
Full 2023 pricing is still TBA. For reference, the 2022 S6 starts at $74,800, while the S7 begins at $84,600. Audi also charges a $1,095 destination fee for either car.
Design Edition Audis get dark chrome accents in place of the usual chrome trim. The Audi rings on the grille and decklid are even darker glossy black.
Shoppers can choose any of the normal A6 or A7 colors or a hue exclusive to the Design Edition – Arrow Gray (pictured).
Inside, a black vegan microsuede fabric (Audi calls it Dinamica) covers seating surfaces, steering wheel, shifter, and the underside of the console. Contrast red stitching appears throughout.
