Volkswagen’s ID.4 electric vehicle (EV) will get a slight price increase for the 2022 model year. But the additional cost gets buyers a longer range, faster charging, and less hassle at many charging stations.
The 2022 ID.4 will start at $40,800, plus a $1,195 destination charge. That’s an increase of $795 over last year’s model. That’s nearly $20,000 less than the best-selling electric SUV, the Tesla Model Y, and within close range of the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
The ID.4 is still eligible for the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit.
What is the ID.4?
The ID.4 sits in the footprint of a compact SUV but features interior space that rivals many larger vehicles. It’s available as a 201-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive model or a 295-horsepower, all-wheel-drive model. Reviewers have praised its smooth ride and handling and the upscale quality of its interior materials.
A clever light bar stretching the width of the cabin at the base of the windshield changes color to subtly communicate battery charge and flashes side-to-side to give turn-by-turn directions.
Updates for 2022:
Most of the changes VW has made for the 2022 model year are simple matters of software programming, but they should make the ID.4 easier to live with day-to-day.
VW says the range will increase, though the battery pack remains the same. The EPA hasn’t weighed in on the new range yet, so we don’t know how much longer the new model can travel between charges. The 2021 model was rated for between 240 and 260 miles depending on options.
The 2022 ID.4 can accept energy at a rate of 135 kW – 10 more than last year. That should allow it to charge faster.
Buyers might appreciate another change to the charging process even more, though. The 2022 model is now capable of plug-and-charge charging at Electrify America charging stations. That means drivers can plug in the car and walk away without paging through touchscreen menus and entering payment information. The system will recognize the vehicle and charge the appropriate account.
All ID.4s come with three years of free charging at Electrify America stations.
