For the 2022 model year, every trim level of the Toyota 4Runner will get new safety technology. The 4Runner lineup will also gain a new trim level that emphasizes on-road performance. And the off-road-oriented TRD Pro model will offer a wild new color option.
Prices are up a bit – the increase is as little as $305 on some trim levels, as much as $1,375 on others – but not out of line with the price increases we’ve been seeing from most manufacturers for the new model year. The 2022 4Runner will start at $37,305.
New Safety Tech
The entire 4Runner lineup will now come standard with some safety tech that used to be available only as an added-cost option.
These include upgraded headlights. LED low beams and high beams, as well as LED fog lights, are now included at every level. This is increasingly a trend in the automotive market, and we credit the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for it. Since 2020, vehicles have only been able to qualify for the higher of the group’s two awards if they come equipped with high-scoring headlights across all trim levels.
A rear-occupancy alert now signals the driver if they may have left a child or pet in the back seat.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are now included on the SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, and Limited trims.
New On-Road Performance Trim
A first for the 4Runner, a new TRD Sport on-road performance trim bows for 2022. It borrows some performance features from the top-of-the-line TRD rough roader, such as a hood scoop, front spoiler, and roof rails. But it adds the adaptive suspension from the Limited trim, along with 20-inch wheels.
TRD Pro Gets Wild New Color
Finally, the celebrated TRD Pro off-road model gets a bright new hue for 2022. Toyota offers a TRD Pro-exclusive shade every year. This year, it’s Electric Lime Metallic, which is every bit as attention-getting as it sounds like. The color is also found on the 2022 Tacoma TRD Pro.
The 2022 4Runner TRD Pro is also available in gray, black, or white if you want the capability without the stares. The TRD Pro also adds a panoramic view camera called the Multi-Terrain Monitor to help navigate tight spaces on the trail.
