The Subaru Outback Wilderness is the first model in Subaru’s new Wilderness sub-brand. Most Subaru models are pretty good off-roaders, but the Wilderness models put a greater emphasis on capability and have rugged styling to match.
Here are a few of our favorite details that make the Subaru Outback Wilderness different.
Extra Ground Clearance
The regular Outback has 8.7 inches of ground clearance, and the Wilderness model increases the ride height almost a full inch to 9.5 inches. That extra ground clearance goes a long way in off-road driving and broadens what the Outback is capable of.
Enhanced X-Mode
Subaru re-tuned and upgraded the dual-function X-Mode for the Outback Wilderness. It has two off-road drive modes: Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. Depending on the terrain, these drive modes regulate wheel spin for the best off-road driving experience. They can also come in handy if you live in a climate where the roads get snowy.
Rugged Appearance Package
The rugged appearance package on the Outback Wilderness isn’t just for show. It has more durable plastic cladding resilient to bumps and scratches, an anti-glare hood decal, a front skid plate, and improved approach and departure angles. For some extra style, it has unique black wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires, Anodized Copper-finish accents, and an exclusive available Geyser Blue paint color.
Unique Interior
Every Outback has a spacious and practical interior thanks to its wagon-like body, but the inside of the Wilderness model is special. It has water-repellant StarTex upholstery that can take a beating in off-road adventures, and it has unique Subaru Wilderness embroidery on the front headrests. It also has Anodized Copper-finish interior accents and stitching.
Re-Tuned EyeSight Driver Assist Tech
The standard EyeSight safety tech suite in the Outback Wilderness is specially tuned for the increased ground clearance and off-road upgrades in the Wilderness trim. EyeSight bundles valuable features like adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, pre-collision braking, and more.
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Of course, every Subaru Outback comes standard with symmetrical all-wheel drive, but it’s a critical factor in the off-road capability of the Wilderness model. The AWD system optimizes power delivery to all four wheels to optimize performance on-road and off.
