If you want to order a Subaru BRZ custom-made to your specifications, you’re going to have to wait at least a year. Subaru has taken as many orders as it can fill for the 2022 model. It’s still possible to buy one from dealership stock if you can find one.
Subaru’s little 2-door sports car is all-new for 2022. Reviewers have been impressed with the redesigned BRZ’s handling — the chassis is 50% stiffer than the one in the 2021 model. It’s modestly more powerful than the model it replaces, with a new 2.4-liter horizontally-opposed boxer engine making 224 horsepower. It’s available with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. New for 2022, that automatic has a blip function for smoother downshifts.
The 2022 BRZ starts at $27,995, plus $960 for delivery.
Subaru closing the order books doesn’t mean it’s impossible to buy a 2022 BRZ. Dealers have ordered thousands of the cars, and the factory will continue churning them out to deliver to dealerships for sale.
It doesn’t even mean you’re stuck buying what your local dealership has in stock. Dealers frequently trade amongst themselves, so it’s often possible for a dealership to find a car with the features and colors you’d like on another lot and get it for you.
But the BRZ has been selling at an impressive clip, which could make dealer trades difficult.
Thankfully, buyers with their hearts set on this particular sports car have another option. Subaru builds the BRZ in partnership with Toyota. Toyota dealers sell their own version – the Toyota GR 86 – that is mechanically identical and, visually, close to identical. Toyota is still accepting orders for the 2022 GR 86.
