The Nissan Frontier is all-new for 2022 and has a lot to offer. It features chiseled new styling and an excellent V6 engine making 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. It is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and can tow up to 6,720 pounds. Frontier is available in King Cab and Crew Cab versions, and despite growing 4.5 inches since the last model, it still fits in most garages.
The Frontier comes standard with rear-wheel drive, while 4-wheel drive with a shift-on-the-fly 2-speed transfer case is optional. It can seat up to five passengers. There’s a choice of 5- or 6-foot cargo beds, depending on the configuration.
The Frontier is available in four trim levels starting with the base Frontier S model. Features include remote keyless entry with push-button ignition, NissanConnect 8-inch touchscreen display, manual seating, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Frontier SV adds 6-way power driver’s seat with 2-way lumbar support. The Frontier Pro-X and Frontier Pro-4X boast equipment upgrades outside and in, including a larger 9-inch touchscreen display and lava red contrast stitching.
Other features include standard hill-start assist, forward-collision warning system, a damped locking tailgate, and trailer sway control. The 4-wheel drive models include hill descent control, allowing the Frontier to creep down a steep hill with self-controlled braking. Our favorite Nissan feature is here, too: The Easy Fill Tire Alert. It’s a handy system that sounds the horn when you have reached proper inflation.
Passenger Room and Comfort
At the forefront of the 5-passenger 2022 Nissan Frontier are NASA-inspired “zero-gravity” seats. They offer a nice blend of comfort and lateral support and are good for the long haul.
In addition to comfortable seating, there is plenty of onboard storage. Center console storage is four liters by volume. That’s about twice that found in most of the Frontier’s rivals. Handy door pockets offer more space, and there is even ample storage under the back seat. Nissan now uses much more sound insulation in the new Frontier, making it quieter. Credit goes to the trick hydraulic cab mounts that reduce cabin vibration, a new thicker carpet, and the use of laminated side glass in the front doors.
Buyers of the Frontier S and SV may choose between charcoal and sandstone interior colors. Those selecting the Pro-X (2WD) and the Pro 4-X (4WD) models receive an interior of charcoal cloth with lava red stitching. Stepping up to the Frontier PRO Premium Package ($2,790) brings a leather interior and other features.
Features and Tech
Nissan designers strove to place the Frontier on equal footing with its rivals when designing this new model. The center stack has been reworked to present a more unified and intuitive operating field. At the head of all this reconfiguration is a new touchscreen that offers standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The standard display is 8 inches diagonally, while the upgraded version is has a 9-inch surface.
Available options include the Technology Package ($990) for the Pro-X trim level. It offers adaptive cruise control, rear automatic braking, and high beam assist. Other features like lane-departure warning, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear sonar system, and traffic sign recognition are also available.
If off-roading is your thing, you might consider the available Intelligent Around View Monitor with Off-road mode. This option enables a 360-degree view that is helpful, especially on tight trails. This feature is part of the PRO-4X Convenience package ($1,990).
The Frontier PRO Premium Package ($2,790) brings several other desirable features. They include a Fender 10-speaker premium audio system, a power sliding moonroof, and leather-appointed seating.
