The most fun-to-drive editions of the Mini Cooper hardtop and convertible benefit from a cosmetic refresh and an optional suspension upgrade for the 2022 model year.
The John Cooper Works models are Mini’s most driver-focused editions. As such, they employ a lively 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder making 228 horsepower. The hardtop model comes with a 6-speed manual transmission and starts at $32,900 (plus an $850 destination fee). The convertible is available only with an 8-speed automatic and starts at $38,900.
While the engine and transmission receive no changes, the optional adaptive suspension sees an update. According to Mini, it “features a new frequency-selective damper technology that operates with an additional valve acting on the traction side.”
The system acts within 50 to 100 milliseconds to smooth out pressure peaks within the shock absorber and provides 10% more damping force. Mini says this increases the car’s agility and steering precision.
For 2022, the Mini JCW models get a larger front fascia with huge air intakes to clearly distinguish them from the rest of the Cooper lineup. The side scuttles also get updates, though with a much subtler hand. There’s a larger rear diffuser as well. Convertible buyers can opt for a Union Jack ragtop because the Cooper has always been the most British car Americans can buy.
Inside, the central instrument cluster sports changes that include an 8.8-inch touchscreen. Mini says, “The likewise new operating system facilitates intuitive control of vehicle functions, audio program, navigation, communication, and apps. Live widgets are now available for this purpose, which can be selected by means of a swiping motion on the touch display.”
