Lexus unveiled an all-new version of its NX compact SUV over the summer. With chiseled good looks, impressive technology, and available hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, the 2022 Lexus NX is poised to steal some attention from the athletic German models that dominate our list of the best compact luxury SUVs. We expected it to compete on price by keeping its sticker near the $40,000 mark.
We overshot. The 2022 Lexus NX will start at just $37,950 (plus $1,075 destination).
For a starting price nearly $5,000 lower than that of the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC, or BMW X3, the 2022 NX gives you modest power from its front-drive 203-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine.
But a step up to the NX 350 swaps in a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine sending 275 horsepower to all four wheels, courtesy of standard AWD. That’s still cheaper than the entry-level prices of most rivals.
The top-of-the-line NX 450h+ plug-in hybrid combines a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors for 302 horsepower. Lexus says it can travel up to 36 miles on electric power alone before engaging its gasoline engine.
Since the average American drives less than 30 miles per day, the NX 450h+ could be used as an electric car in day-to-day driving while still giving its owners the option of a spontaneous road trip of any length. It starts at $55,560 but is eligible for federal electric-car tax credits that could shave up to $7,500 off that price.
