Most compact SUVs are a little short on off-road skills. The Jeep Compass has always been the class standout off the asphalt. But the current Compass suffers from an abundance of hard plastic surfaces inside that don’t age well. Jeep used this week’s Chicago Auto Show to unveil an updated 2022 Compass that fixes that issue.
The 2022 Compass arrives in the fall with prices that start at $24,995 and top out at $31,395. Destination is $1,495 extra.
Subtle Changes Outside, Big Changes Inside
The new Compass has seen a bit of an exterior makeover. The grille is slightly smaller than the current model, and head- and taillights have been restyled.
But the real changes come inside. Designers gave it an entirely new dashboard. The new dash is upholstered, more pleasant to the touch, and subjects the driver to none of the glare of the old model. The center panel is available in a contrasting color scheme that looks elegant for the price range. An 8.4-inch touchscreen is standard, with a larger, 10.1-inch screen available. Higher trims get a digital instrument screen in place of gauges.
“Our goal was to raise consumer expectations of what a compact SUV interior should look and feel like,” says Jeep director of interior design Chris Benjamin.
The drivetrain is unchanged, but the suspension is returned for a smoother ride and the steering upgraded for “improved on-road responsiveness.”
New Safety Tech
A full suite of driver assists is now standard, including automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
The changes should help the Compass compete with class leaders like the Toyota RAV4, our Best Buy Award winner in the segment.
