Ford has sold every 2022 Mustang Mach-E it can build. The company told dealers to stop taking orders for its all-electric SUV this week.
Ford Spokesperson Emma Bergg explains, “Due to unprecedented demand, retail order banks are closed for Model Year 2022 in the U.S.”
She adds, “We will continue to sell the limited number of units remaining from dealer stock,” but that note is mostly fantasy. Virtually every 2022 Mustang Mach-E was sold through pre-order, with the few that reached dealerships disappearing within days.
Ford hasn’t said when it will begin accepting orders for the 2023 model. Bergg promises to pass on that information “as soon as possible.”
The Mustang Mach-E is an all-electric midsize crossover with options ranging from 266 to 480 horsepower. It has an EPA-certified driving range of between 247 and 314 miles, depending on model. It borrows styling cues and a name from the iconic Ford Mustang sports car but has the higher stance and added cargo space of an SUV.
The Mach-E has been a huge sales success for Ford. The company currently has the capability to produce about 70,000 of them per year. Ford is building the capacity to produce up to 200,000 per year by the end of next year. It’s part of a new strategy that involves splitting the company into two units, one focused on gas-powered cars and another on electric vehicles.
Ford has largely moved to a build-to-order system for its newest models. The Mustang Mach-E, Bronco SUV, Maverick small pickup, and upcoming F-150 Lightning electric pickup were all sold through a reservations system. In all four cases, Ford sold out of the vehicles before it finished building them.
