2021 Tesla Model S, X Recalled Over Airbags

Tesla has recalled approximately 7,600 2021 Model S sedans and Model X SUVs because the vehicles may contain faulty driver’s side airbags.

In documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Tesla explains that a new manufacturing process at a supplier produced some airbags that can catch on their hard plastic covers as they deploy. That can tear the airbag fabric. A torn airbag will not provide safe cushioning in an accident.

The problem isn’t present in every Model S or Model X. The airbag supplier used the faulty process for only a few months. That helps Tesla narrow the problem down to specific cars. Tesla will contact the owners of those cars and arrange to replace the airbag unit with one of a different design.

Recall repairs are always free. Manufacturers attempt to contact every owner, but they don’t always reach them all with the news. That can leave millions of us driving cars with dangerous defects we could have repaired at no cost. Find out if your car has ever been recalled at our recall center.
