The 2021 Ford Bronco promises to be one of the biggest news-making SUVs in recent years. Thanks to its retro-inspired exterior and adventure-ready spec sheet, the Bronco poses a strong threat to off-road-oriented rivals that include the Jeep Wrangler SUV, along with compact pickup trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado, and GMC Canyon.
One trim level above the base Bronco, the Big Bend trim could hit a sweet spot for Bronco buyers who want more comfort, tech, and safety features than the entry-level model offers. And let’s not forget, the Bronco Big Bend can be outfitted with hardware to make it even more adept on paved roads, or across rugged and rocky trails.
To help get a handle on what the Bronco will have to offer once it arrives in the summer of 2021, let’s take a closer glance at the standard and optional features of the Bronco Big Bend.
Bronco Big Bend Price and Details
Before adding options or factoring in the destination fee, a Ford Bronco Big Bend in 2-door format comes with a base price of $33,385. Upgrading to the 4-door version will cost you slightly more. That version starts at $35,880.
If you plan on routinely carrying more than one passenger along for the ride, the longer wheelbase and more spacious second row of the 4-door is worth the additional cost.
Engine
The Big Bend is motivated by a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder that delivers 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels. This engine is coupled to a 7-speed manual transmission, and, like all Broncos, 4-wheel drive is standard.
Optional is a turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 that delivers 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes with a 10-speed automatic, versus the 7-speed found in the entry-level Big Bend trim.
Towing
No matter which body style or powertrain you choose, the Bronco’s maximum tow rating is 3,500 pounds when equipped with the Towing Capability package. That’s equal to a 4-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, but it’s thousands less than the max towing capability of most compact pickup trucks.
Bronco Big Bend Dimensions
In terms of its size, the 2021 Bronco Big Bend 2-door model is 174 inches long, 76 inches wide, and approximately 72 inches high. The 4-door Bronco rides on a 116-inch wheelbase – the one in the 2-door variant is 100 inches – and stretches to a total length of 189 inches.
Minus the addition of any tire-widening upgrades (such as the available Sasquatch Package), the front and rear track of the Bronco Big Bend are 65 inches in width. That’s important to remember if your off-road driving takes you through very narrow trails.
Big Bend Standard and Optional Features
The Ford Bronco Big Bend is far from the fanciest trim, though it comes with many of the available extras offered on more upmarket models. In addition to the choice of two turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, you can upgrade the Bronco Big Bend with several option packages focused on safety, cabin comfort, or all-terrain capability.
Before we get to customizing a Bronco Big Bend, let’s look at the baseline standard features. These include a manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel, push-button start, leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather-wrapped gear knob, cruise control, plus an added driving mode in the driver-selectable G.O.A.T (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) system.
Inside, an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility sits in the middle of the dashboard.
Externally, the Big Bend stands out from a base Bronco thanks to its carbonized gray front grille, matching 17-inch alloy wheels, and LED fog lights. The Big Bend is available in a range of 10 exterior colors and comes with a choice of removable hardtops and a soft top (the latter is only offered on the 4-door).
For adventure lovers, the Sasquatch Package includes features like 17-inch black-painted and beadlock-capable alloy wheels, wider fender flares, a higher suspension, 4.7:1 final drive ratio, and 315/70R17 Mud-Terrain (35-inch) tires.
The available Mid Package should be popular, thanks to its wide range of upgrades and minimal cost. For an extra $1,495, the Mid Package adds features like dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, remote start, and active safety items like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera with active guidelines.
