Land Rover has taken the wraps off the 2020 Range Rover Evoque, the first major redesign since this urban crossover’s introduction as a 2012 model. In addition to its new underpinnings and design, the 2020 Evoque boasts a new 296-horsepower mild hybrid powertrain option to go along with the standard 246-horsepower Ingenium 4-cylinder turbo. The model will be offered as a 5-door; a 3-door model was previously dropped and no word yet on whether the convertible will carry over to the new architecture.
Available in six trim levels, pricing starts at $42,650 for the S models equipped with the turbocharged 246-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine.
The Evoque also features new driver assist features including a ClearSight Ground View camera that shows the terrain directly in front of the vehicle as part of an optional 360-degree Surround View Camera. The all-wheel-drive vehicle is also equipped with Terrain Response 2 traction technology that automatically adjusts throttle inputs, stability control and other systems in response to road or trail surface conditions. Other upgrades improve the vehicle’s ability to ford water as deep as 23.6 inches.
All-new design inside and out
While the 2020 Evoque has a similar footprint to the vehicle it replaces, the wheelbase has grown nearly an inch to boost interior comfort, while interior volume has grown to 21.54 cu.-ft. behind the second row and to 50.5 cu.-ft. when that 40/20/40-split seatback is folded down.
The exterior of the Evoque features a smooth, minimalist shape with simple lines and flush glass area that is neatly integrated into the overall design. While the shape is clean, it’s more muscular thanks to more pronounced shoulders and wheel arches, a look that’s enhanced by optional 21-inch wheels. The Evoque is further modernized by thin LED front and rear lighting elements.
The simple lines of the exterior carry over inside where the cockpit features uncluttered surfaces. The use of digital displays and touch surfaces eliminate the need for traditional buttons and switches, which also contributes to the minimalist approach to design. Evoque also stresses sustainability by using Kvadrat wool blend fabrics, Dinamica suedecloth as well as other recycled and natural materials in lieu of traditional wood accents and leather upholstery.

Innovative powertrains
While the base engine is a carryover 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine making 246 horsepower (a slight increase over the current 237 horsepower), the 2020 Evoque has an optional mild hybrid powertrain that incorporates 48-volt architecture to support an engine-mounted belt-integrated starter generator. This setup provides 296 horsepower. Below 11 mph, the engine shuts off and the belt generator provides regenerative braking to store energy used to get the vehicle moving again from a stop. All Evoque models are also equipped with 9-speed ZF automatic transmissions in support of the standard all-wheel-drive system.
Among the driver assists available on the Evoque are adaptive cruise control with steering assist, lane keep assist and emergency braking. Off-road assists include hill descent control, gradient release control and all-terrain progress control, which essentially functions like off-road cruise control. In addition to the forward looking ClearSight Ground View system, the ClearSight Rearview Mirror also uses camera technology to display the area immediately behind the vehicle in the rearview mirror.
Pricing and launch
The 2020 Range Rover Evoque base price represents a bump of $850 over the 2019 model. Other models equipped with the base 246-horsepower 2.0-liter engine include the $47,200 SE and the $56,850 limited run First Edition models. Pricing of the performance-oriented 296-horsepower R-Dynamic models starts $46,600 for the base S trim, $51,150 for the SE and $55,800 for the range topping HSE. All prices exclude $995 delivery. The 2020 Range Rover Evoque goes on sale beginning this spring.
