Starting in mid-2019, buyers of Ram 1500 trucks will have a new tailgate option. The new Ram 1500 Multifunction Tailgate retains the same operation as the standard drop-down tailgate, as it’s fully damped and can be opened via the key fob remote. However, if you want an easier way to load cargo from the curb, you can reach it by using the tailgate’s 60/40-split swing-away doors. Using these doors instead of the standard drop-down function also makes it easier to step into the bed, plus it eases loading from a forklift as well as washing the front-most part of the truck bed. In addition, you don’t have to remove the trailer and hitch before opening the swing doors.
Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand – FCA explains, “The Ram Multifunction Tailgate is intuitive to operate, and owners will find it immediately useful. Combined with Ram’s class-exclusive RamBox feature and new tailgate step, we’re taking Ram’s cargo management and storage to the next level.”
Spray-in bedliner part of package
The Ram Multifunction Tailgate, which includes a spray-in bedliner as part of the package, can be opened four ways: flat (traditional), left door only, right door only, and both doors. Each swing-away door opens 88 degrees. For even easier cargo access, Ram is introducing a new retractable center-mounted step.

These new features extend Ram’s list of available cargo solutions for the truck bed, including the RamBox system, which uses weatherproof, lockable storage bins. The RamBox bins, which are built into the bed rails, are illuminated and can be drained, and feature a 115-volt, 400-watt outlet. When you opt for the RamBox system, you can also get a pickup bed divider that also serves as a 2-foot bed extender, and cargo rail system with four sliding, adjustable cleats.
FCA’s truck unit is offering the Multifunction Tailgate on all seven 2019 Ram 1500 models for a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $995. The center step is $295.
