Do you remember the blocky, rugged 2-door Chevy Blazer from back in the day? Yeah, this isn’t it. Built on the same platform that underpins the Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia, the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Blazer is a midsize 4-door 5-seat SUV built for on-road adventures.

In urban and suburban settings, the latest Blazer rides and handles well but its chief appeal might be its styling. Up front sit thin, sharply-drawn “headlights” that aren’t headlights at all but rather LED running lights. The actual headlights are subtly stationed midway down the fascia. The new model boasts a modern, striking shape that’s awfully appealing…provided you aren’t hung up on preconceptions about what a “Blazer” should look like.

Clean, contemporary cabin

Inside the vibe is more sedate but an uncluttered layout, abundant storage spots, soft materials, and rear seats that slide and recline help create a welcoming and functional space. Front and center is a vivid 8-inch touchscreen that comes standard on all trims offering an intuitive layout, clear icons, Teen Driver technology, and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

From a mechanical perspective the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is the most economical choice, returning up to 29 MPG on the freeway. The optional V6, included standard on Premier and RS trims, delivers superior thrust and a max tow rating of 4,500 pounds for buyers who value those capabilities.

Pricing, competition

The 2-row midsize SUV category has grown increasingly competitive of late. Stalwarts like the Nissan Murano and Jeep Grand Cherokee soldier on while a fresh Hyundai Santa Fe and all-new Honda Passport sit ready to lure SUV shoppers. Despite stout competition the Blazer charms with daring style, satisfying road manners, and a generous standard equipment list. We’re guessing it’ll be eagerly received. The all-new 2019 Chevy Blazer is currently in dealers with a starting price of $29,995 including destination charges.
