2018 Volkswagen Arteon Previewed

Prior to its debut in March at the Geneva Auto Show, Volkswagen released a preview sketch of its new Arteon sedan. Set to replace the current Volkswagen CC, this elegant, range-topping fastback 5-door will introduce a new “progressive Volkswagen design language.” Initially seen on the VW Sport Coupe GTE Concept unveiled at last year’s Geneva event, this new look is set to filter into the rest of the automaker’s lineup in the coming years. Among the key highlights on the Arteon are LED lighting elements – including bold 3D headlamps that are integrated into the grille bar configuration – frameless door glass and a large, wide-opening liftback.

Dimensions have yet to be released, but VW has confirmed the new Arteon will be larger than the current CC and offer more passenger room and significantly greater cargo capacity. It will be based on a stretched version of the automaker’s MQB modular platform that also underpins the Passat. Global versions of the car will be available with both turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines and a possible hybrid powertrain similar to the one found in the GTE Concept.

While the new Arteon will go on sale next summer in some markets, there’s still no confirmation when — or if — it will turn up in U.S. showrooms.
