Already shown as a Toyota show car in Europe and promised in production trim at Geneva next March, the 2017 Scion C-HR concept bowed in L.A. It is the third all-new vehicle slated for the division following the recently introduced 2015 Scion iM and iA. The 5-door hatch C-HR is expected to compete with other subcompact crossover SUVs like the Honda HR-V and Nissan Juke.
"Scion is known for doing things differently and maybe even being a little weird," said Scion vice president Andrew Gilleland. "This C-HR Concept embraces that idea and wears it like a badge of honor. We couldn’t be more excited to add the production version to our line-up."

New direction for Scion
The addition a crossover inspired by the C-HR concept is part of a change in direction for Scion, which has been moving away from quirky and boxy vehicles like the xB and xD to a more conventional lineup that includes the existing tC coupe, iM sportwagon and the iA sedan.
As is typical with crossover SUVs, the Scion C-HR emphasizes a taller ride height than conventional hatchbacks. The sharp angled styling is inspired by a cut gemstone with sheer, chiseled body panels. Graphite black accents on the grille, rear bumper, fender flares and lower side panels are strong SUV styling cues. Large 21-inch wheels contribute to the off-road inspired stance.

New generation architecture
Following the Prius, the Scion C-HR will be the second vehicle to use the Toyota New Generation Architecture, a platform that features a fully independent suspension, lower center of gravity, dynamic performance and a rigid body. "Even though the C-HR had a high ride height, our focus was on creating a fantastic urban driving car," said C-HR chef engineer Hiro Koba.
Beyond showing the concept, Scion is offering little in the way of technical details other than the use of TNGA. Those details will be announced when the production version of the vehicle is introduced next year. Gilleland predicted, however, that "The Scion C-HR will be a stand-out vehicle for us. Its styling will lead the way, but its substance will seal the deal. It’s got amazing driving dynamics, superb functionality, and like all Scions, premium features at an accommodating price. There’s no doubt this will be the next iconic vehicle for Scion."
