BMW announced engine upgrades for the 2017 2 Series Coupe and Convertible that offer enhanced performance and efficiency. To properly reflect their added motive force, the cars also have been renamed, with the 228i becoming the 230i and the performance oriented M235i set to wear an M240 badge.

The latest-iteration of the 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder in the new 2017 BMW 230i delivers 248 horsepower up from 240 and makes 258 lb-ft of torque, a gain of three peak twist units.
More muscle in the new M240i
Slotting above the new 230i but below the full-on M2, the 2017 BMW M240i bumps its performance index up a notch thanks to a new 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-6 that makes 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque – respective gains of 15 and 39 compared to the 3.0-liter used in the M235i. Currently fitted in the 2016 BMW 340i sedan, this new “B58” turbo six is an all-aluminum design that features a twin-scroll turbocharger, variable valve timing and variable-camshaft timing that helps it develop maximum torque from 1,520 to 4,500 rpm.
Backed by an 8-speed Steptronic Sport Automatic transmission, the rear-drive M240i Coupe accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds — or 4.2 ticks in xDrive AWD form. Purists who opt for a no-cost 6-speed manual gearbox with rev-matching downshift function will need 4.6 seconds to reach that benchmark speed. The M240i Convertible set is a tenth of a second off those respective paces, but each variant is still 0.3 second quicker than its M235i counterpart.

Like the 2016 models, these new M Performance models boast a full sport suspension with 10mm lower ride height, Servotronic Variable Sports Steering, upgraded M Sport brakes and 18-inch light-alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires as well as a model-specific M aero package. The 2017 BMW 230i and M240i Coupe and Convertible lineup arrive in showrooms this summer with pricing announced closer to the official on-sale date.
