The newest and smallest member of the automaker’s growing crossover SUV family, the 2017 Audi Q2, made its global debut in Geneva. Smaller than an A3 Sportback and intended to attract young, urban buyers, this stylish subcompact introduces a new facet of Audi design language as well as advanced tech from its larger siblings. Unfortunately, there are no plans at present to bring it to showrooms here in America.
Based on the VW Group’s versatile MQB modular platform, the new Q2 measures 164.4 inches nose to tail and rides on a 102.4-inch wheelbase. As for the styling of this diminutive 5-seater, Audi Head of Design Marc Lichte, notes: “In the Audi Q2 we have developed a distinctively geometric form language with model-specific design characteristics. The car exhibits an independent character within the Q family.” Keys to that distinctiveness can be seen in its prominent single frame grille, low roof, bold body sculpting and the C-pillars with contrasting color blades.

The cabin reflects a similarly expressive but unique, melding a user-friendly layout and standard MMI screen with upscale touches like the availability of Audi’s Virtual Cockpit instrument package, head-up display, navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot and the full range of Audi Connect apps. A power liftgate affords even easier access to the Q2’s 14.7-foot cargo bay that can be increased to a maximum of 37.1 cu ft when the backs of its 40/20/40 rear bench seat are folded down. The Q2 also will complement its standard Audi pre-sense front system with first-in-class features like optional adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane-departure warning, active lane assist, traffic sign recognition and rear parking and cross-traffic assist.

The Q2 will offer no fewer than six engine choices, including three gasoline and three diesel engines with outputs ranging from 114 to 188 horsepower. A 6-speed manual and 7-speed dual-clutch S Tronic will be available on all but the top TDI and 2.0TFSI gas engines. On two mid-level Q2 models, these engines are paired with a new and a more efficient dual-clutch transmission employing Quattro all-wheel. The Q2 also will be available with adaptive damping and multi-mode Audi Drive Select. Sales of the 2017 Audi Q2 begin in Europe this fall.
