Making its formal debut at the New York Auto Show, the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is set to become the most fuel-efficient member of the family. Save for these teaser images, Toyota offered no additional information on the first Hybrid Synergy Drive system fitted to a RAV4 model. With the phase-out of the low-volume RAV4 EV, this newest version of the automaker’s popular compact crossover SUV will provide a more affordable and practical alternative that further leverages its competitive position against key segment rivals like the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Nissan Rogue.

Although today’s lower gasoline prices have diminished the popularity of hybrids in general, Toyota has continued its efforts to further develop and refine the technology – of which it currently holds about a 70-percent share here in America. It will be interesting to see what the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has to offer in the way of pricing and official EPA numbers, and the enhanced powertrain and battery technology slated to appear in the all-new 2016 Prius that launches later this year.
